Distillery District Neighbourhood History

Prior to Toronto Distillery District real estate becoming some of the most desirable among today’s young professionals and young families, the Toronto Distillery District has a long history that wasn’t as glamorous as it’s current state. Entering the Distillery District can make you feel like you are going back in time. The Distillery District is comprised of heritage buildings of the former Gooderham and Worts Distillery, which was founded in 1832 and became the world’s largest distillery by the late 1860s.

The last bit of distillery operations ended in 1990 and created redevelopment and investment opportunities. The Toronto Distillery District includes the largest collection of well-preserved Victorian-era industrial architecture in all of North America. After the recession in the early 1990s, the condominium prices and office lease rates in downtown Toronto prevented any revitalization of the Distillery District. While the Distillery District awaited revitalization, the area and historical buildings were used to film over 800 television and film productions.

Distillery District Neighbourhood Today

Today, the Distillery District consists of high rise condominiums surrounded by historical buildings and cobble stone walking streets. You will find cafes, restaurants, shops and art galleries scattered throughout this community. The magic of the Distillery District makes it a popular location for weddings and photo shoots. This neighbourhood is ideal for young couples, young families, singles and students.

Distillery District Properties & Real Estate

The Toronto Distillery District is made up of both high-rise and low-rise condominiums. The first two buildings were built in the early 1990s. Today, you can find condos of various different sizes for substantially different prices.
