Davisville

Davisville Neighbourhood History

The village of Davisville is named after John Davis, a man who immigrated to Canada from England in 1840. Davis was Davisville’s first postmaster and was one of the founders of the Davisville Public School. Davis also operated Davis Pottery which, at that time, was the largest employer in the area.

During the 1860s, the south part of Davisville which was owned by the Davis family was subdivided. The north part of the land belonged to the Church and remained undeveloped until 1911 when it was sold to Dovercourt Land and Building Company. The old two-story Davisville Post Office still exists and is located on the north-east corner of Yonge Street and Davisville Avenue.
