The village of Davisville is named after John Davis, a man who immigrated to Canada from England in 1840. Davis was Davisville’s first postmaster and was one of the founders of the Davisville Public School. Davis also operated Davis Pottery which, at that time, was the largest employer in the area.
During the 1860s, the south part of Davisville which was owned by the Davis family was subdivided. The north part of the land belonged to the Church and remained undeveloped until 1911 when it was sold to Dovercourt Land and Building Company. The old two-story Davisville Post Office still exists and is located on the north-east corner of Yonge Street and Davisville Avenue.
Today, the neighbourhood of Davisville is popular for young professionals, young families and singles. Davisville has exceptional recreational facilities as well as a substantial shopping district and lively nightlife. It is a short drive or walk from both Yonge & Eglinton as well as Yonge & St. Clair and is located on the Yonge subway line, making it a convenient location for professional to commute to and from work.
Most of Davisville’s homes were built in the 1920s and 1930s. Most of the homes west of Mount Pleasant Road are large homes that consists of two and three stories and are either English Cottage or Edwardian-style. There are also several duplexes located within this area.
The homes east of Mount Pleasant Road mostly consist of small detached homes, bungalows and semi-detached homes. This area of Davisville contains several historical homes that are from the 1800s. It has also become a popular area for individuals looking to build new custom homes.
The Davisville Village also includes several newer condominiums. Most of these buildings are located on Merton Street and Balliol Street as well as along Eglinton Avenue.
