Fort York Neighbourhood History

The historical Fort York has been situated at the south west end of the downtown core of Toronto since 1793. The Battle of York took place in 1813 and was fought against the Americans. Fort York was destroyed during this battle but was rebuilt in 1814. In 1923, Fort York was designated as a National Historic Site of Canada.

The railway began operating just north of Fort York in the 1850s which brought a large amount of industry to the area. Fort York was used by the Canadian Military up until 1934 when it opened to the public as a historic museum. In 1943, city planners had proposed to tear down the historic site in order to make room for the Gardiner Expressway but several community groups defended Fort York as a historic site and the Gardiner Expressway was forced to work around Fort York.

Fort York Neighbourhood Today

Today, Fort York real estate and the neighbourhood of Fort York includes several high-rise, mid-rise and low-rise condominiums as well as a number of townhouses located steps away from the beautiful Toronto Waterfront. Although Fort York is one of Toronto’s newest neighbourhoods, it is located on one of Toronto’s most historic pieces of land. During the summer months, Fort York is home to several different festivals and events. Fort York is within walking distance to a variety of bars, restaurants and patios located in Liberty Village and is a short walk or streetcar ride to the lively and newly revitalized Harbourfront community.
