The subdivision of Lawrence Park was created in 1907 and was developed by the Dovercourt Land Building and Saving Company. Prior to the Dovercourt Land Company acquiring the north parcel of Lawrence Park, it was owned by a man named John Lawrence, which the neighbourhood is named after.
Lawrence Park was created as a suburb for the wealthy under Wilfred Servington Dinnick’s direction. Dinnick was the president of the Dovercourt Land Company. The new neighbourhood was advertised as a location that was ‘four hundred feet above Lake Ontario’, and ‘far from the lake winds in the winter.’
Even with the large amount of attention that was brought to the new Lawrence Park neighbourhood, the development of the area was scattered. The building of the Lawrence Park subdivision was interrupted several times due to two world wars, a recession and a depression. The neighbourhood was finally completed in the 1950s.
The neighbourhood of Lawrence Park is one of the most affluent and exclusive neighbourhoods in Toronto. It is located in a beautiful part of the city that includes mature trees, large parks, rolling hills and winding roads with beautiful large homes. Lawerence Park includes some of the finest schools in Toronto making it a desirable neighbourhood for professionals with school age children.
Lawrence Park includes homes of various styles including Colonial, Tudor Revival, English Cottage and Georgian. The original Lawrence Park homes were built between 1910 and the late 1940s.
Lawrence Park has typically been sensitive to maintain the old world charm of the original homes that were built. It is common to find wood trim around the doors and window frames, decorative fireplace mantels, leaded glass windows and classic wood floors in the majority of Lawrence Park homes. The Lawrence Park neighbourhood is a wonderful place for families and professionals.
