Liberty Village Neighbourhood History

Liberty Village was once part of the Garrison Common in the 1700s and early 1800s. The Garrison Common was a military fort for the Town of York (before it became Toronto). During the Battle of York in 1813, the historic Fort York was used at the base for the Canadian militia.

During the 1850s, various industries were attracted to the area by the arrival of the railway, resulting in the construction of factories and warehouses. Many of these buildings have since been converted into stylish lofts, live/work spaces as well as studios. Liberty Village supposedly got its name from the Central Prison and the Mercer Reformatory for Women which were located in Liberty Village in the late 1800s and early 1900s. In particular, “Liberty Street” got its name due to it being the first ground prisoners would set foot on upon being released.
