South Riverdale Neighbourhood History

What is known today as Riverdale was once known as “Riverside” and was far less developed than it is today. The “Grand Trunk Railway” was introduced to the neighbourhood in the 1850’s – this brought new industries and employment opportunities for labourers who eventually were responsible for most of the building which occurred south of the rail tracks. The area north of the tracks was later developed in the 1880’s. In 1918, the development of Riverdale was increased by the building of the largest bridge in Toronto named the “Prince Edward Viaduct” which connected Riverdale to the City of Toronto.

South Riverdale Neighbourhood Today

Today, Riverdale is one of Toronto’s most desirable neighbourhoods and is conveniently located near the downtown core, making it a popular neighbourhood for those who work in core of the City. Riverdale includes a number of beautiful parks, including Riverdale Park East, which has one of the best views of the Toronto skyline, and Withrow Park, which has a number of outdoor activities such as an outdoor ice hockey rink complete with boards and benches, well-built and diverse playground as well as a wading pool for children and parents to cool off in during the hot summer months. Residents of Riverdale enjoy the many fabulous restaurants located along the west and central portions of the Danforth. Riverdale is a great neighbourhood for a wide range of individuals including young families looking to transition from condo living to living in a home, professionals looking to live close to the Financial District and those looking to live close to the downtown core in general.

South Riverdale Properties & Real Estate

Riverdale is known for its charming and historic Victorian homes as well as its tree-lined streets. Many of the homes were built between the 1880’s and 1924. Many homes still maintain their old character on the exterior with updated contemporary finishes on the interior. You can also still find many homes that have kept their original design, both inside and out. Today, Riverdale is divided into “North Riverdale” and “South Riverdale”. The homes located in North Riverdale tend to be larger and on the more expensive side when compared to South Riverdale. Many of the homes include parking at the rear of the home which is often accessed from a laneway. Most streets also allow for permitted parking. Both North Riverdale and South Riverdale include newer and older townhomes, semi-detached homes, detached homes and duplexes that consist of two or three levels. It is common to find three storey homes with a walkout to a deck on the third level, creating a charming and private space amongst the tree tops.
