St. Lawrence

St. Lawrence Neighbourhood History

A large amount of the St. Lawrence area was created from landfill in the early 1800s and was intended to be used as a large public park along the lake’s waterfront. These plans changed when the land was turned over to the railways by the city. This change of plans attracted industry to the area of St. Lawrence.

From the early 1900s until the late 1940s, St. Lawrence was one of Toronto’s leading industrial centres. During the late 1940s, Toronto’s industrial industry began to move outside of the city. This resulted in a period of decline for the St. Lawrence area. During the 1970s, David Crombie, Toronto’s mayor at the time, decided to turn the St. Lawrence area into the residential community it is today.
