The Annex

The Annex Neighbourhood History

The Annex, one of Toronto’s oldest neighbourhoods, was once one of the most affluent neighbourhoods in Toronto and was called “home” by some very prominent Canadian business owners, including Timothy Eaton and George Gooderham. In the early 1900’s, the neighbourhood began to change as many of the affluent property owners moved north to newer and more extravagant homes in Forest Hill and Lawrence Park. Despite this change, The Annex maintained its charm and has continued to be home to many noteworthy Canadians over the years, including politicians and writers such as Margaret Atwood.

The Annex Neighbourhood Today

Today, The Annex maintains its historical charm and beautiful tree-lined streets. The community is a mix of professionals, artists, politicians, University of Toronto students and more. It is conveniently located within steps to public transit and main roads, such as Avenue Road, making is a very convenient location for those who work in the Financial District or downtown core. The community is only steps from the popular Yorkville community which consists of some of Toronto’s top restaurants and retail shops. The Annex is a great neighbourhood for a wide range of individuals including young families, professionals looking to live close to the Financial District and those looking to live close to the downtown core in general, as well as for students who are attending the University of Toronto. Many of the old larger homes have been divided into multiple rental properties and are used by students who are attending the University, which is only steps away.

The Annex Properties & Real Estate

The annex is known for its large historic, Victorian style red brick homes which were mostly built between 1880 and 1910. The Annex includes some of the most desirable architectural styles in Toronto, including Georgian, Tudor and English Cottage architectures. While the exterior of these homes maintain their original character, many of them have been transformed on the inside and include more contemporary finishes. The Annex continues to be one of Toronto’s most desirable neighbourhoods due to the different styles of homes and its convenient central location.
