What is known as The Upper Beaches today was once known as “Norway”. It is believed that the name Norway came from the native Norway Pine trees that were prevalent in the area at the time. The harvesting of these trees was one of the dominant industries at that time. At one point in the 1800’s, there was a toll gate located at the intersection of Woodbine Avenue & Kingston Road as many visitors would make their way to the community now known as The Beaches to enjoy the different amusement parks that were once located in that area.
The Upper Beaches is one of Toronto’s most desirable neighbourhoods. Residents of The Upper Beaches enjoy a similar lifestyle as the neighbouring “Beaches” community located just to the south of The Upper Beaches. The Upper Beaches neighbourhood consists of similar style homes as The Beaches / The Beach community, including townhomes, duplexes, semi-detached homes, detached homes as well as low rise condos and apartment buildings. Historically, The Upper Beaches has consisted of slightly more affordable housing options when compared to “The Beaches” proper, making it an attractive community for young couples and families who are looking to make a transition from condo living to living in a home. The Upper Beaches is also an attractive community for professionals who work in the downtown core and the Financial District as it is a relatively short commute by car and many residents prefer to take the “Main Go Train” from the Go station located at 213 Main Street, Toronto, near Main and Gerrard. The Upper Beaches is the perfect place to call home for individuals who love the beach, tree-lined streets, older homes with lots of character, outdoor activities and more. The Upper Beaches is a great community for families, couples and singles. Regardless of your specific situation, I’m confident you will enjoy calling The Upper Beaches home. I know I do!
The Upper Beaches is known for its charming and historic homes as well as its tree-lined streets. Many of the homes date back to the 1800’s and 1900’s. Many homes still maintain their old character on the exterior with updated contemporary finishes on the interior. You can also find many homes that have kept their original design on the inside and out. The Upper Beaches include newer and older townhomes, semi-detached homes, detached homes, duplexes and low-rise condos and apartments. Unlike The Beaches neighbourhood to the south, The Upper Beaches consists of slightly more affordable housing options, making it a popular neighbourhood for young families, young couples, young professionals and empty nesters looking to downsize.
