Between 1804 until 1926, the area of today’s York Mills was used for grist and saw mills. York Mills got its name from the former Town of York (Toronto’s predecessor) and from the grist and saw mills that once operated in the valley. During this time, York Mills included a distillery, blacksmith shop, churches, a tannery, a post office, a school and the Joy Miller Tavern (which still exists today on Yonge Street).
York Mills transformed from a rural community to a residential neighbourhood in the 1930s. A large chunk of land between Yonge Street and Bayview Avenue was owned by St. Andrew’s College in the 1920s before it moved to Aurora in 1924. St. Andrew’s Estates purchased this vacant land and operated a championship golf course until the 1950s when the land was sold for development. Today, there are constant reminders that the property was once used as a golf course such as street names like “Foursome” and “Lower Links”.
